Exhaust Pipe Tips

The exhaust tip is the portion of the exhaust that covers that exhaust pipe itself where the exhaust exits the vehicle, which is usually at the back of the car. Since the exhaust tip is the most visible portion of the exhaust, there are many different styles that can be installed depending on the look you are going for. Exhaust tips can be found in a variety of places and are relatively easy to install.

Where to Find Exhaust Tips

Exhaust tips can be purchased from a variety of sources. If you prefer to do your shopping in person so that you can see what you are buying before you plunk down your hard-earned cash, visit the local auto parts store like NAPA to see the selection it offers. Another good place to look is the dealer that sells the make of car that you drive. Chrome tips sold by the dealer will usually be ones made specifically for your car. If you are shopping online, there are far more choices and the prices tend to be better than in stores. Check out large online catalogs from Summit Racing. eBay is another place that will have a selection of exhaust tips.

Different Styles

Exhaust tips come in many different styles. There are oval, round, rectangular and square exhaust tips. Tips can also be had in a wide variety of sizes, from under 2 inches to as large as 5 or 6 inches in diameter and can be found in single as well as dual outlets. As far as the surface appearance, tips come in chrome finishes, which are usually the most common and inexpensive, as well as stainless steel, which can come in a bright polished look or a more muted brushed appearance. There are also carbon fiber tips for a more modern look as well as painted and powdercoated tips. When choosing a tip, stick with a style that will go best with your car. For example, a classic sports cars will not look right with a modern, carbon-fiber exhaust tip.

Care and Installation

Most exhaust tips can be installed with a few tools and a minimum of expertise. Tips are generally held on with either clamps that are tightened around the tips and that clamp them to the exhaust pipe or are tightened on with set screws that go through the tips and tighten into the exhaust pipe. You can also simply take the tips to a muffler shop, where they can be welded on for a more permanent installation. To properly care for exhaust tips, clean them regularly with soap and water. If they are chrome or stainless steel, use the appropriate polish to ensure they look new for years to come.
