Trampoline mats vary from garden to competition.
Trampolines are made from durable material stretched over a metal frame and attached by coils of springs. The type of material, number of springs, thickness of the bands and the performance of the trampoline can vary among models.
History
It is believed that Eskimos were the first to use trampoline mats made from walrus skin. Tumbler and diver George Nissen invented the trampoline we use today in the 1930s and was constructed using the same methods and materials as modern trampolines.
Materials
Tight weave polypropylene is often used
Most trampoline mats are made from polypropylene or nylon. Both are strong and durable fabrics with heavy duty stitching to withstand a large amount of usage. Most mats made for outdoor use also have UV resistant properties.
Competitive Trampolines
The mat of a competitive trampoline is approximately 14 feet by 7 feet in size and made from a strong woven fabric, usually nylon. Web sizes range from 6mm by 6mm to 25mm by 25mm. The width of the fabric band and size of the gaps between the weave affects the performance of the mat, the thinnest providing the largest jumping depth and rebound. Competitive trampoline mats need to be certified by the International Gymnastics Federation.
Recreational Trampolines
The fabric is usually a waterproof canvas or tight mesh polypropylene material and is slightly less durable than competition models. Mats are 10 to 16 feet in diameter. Trampolines for home use are constructed to provide a more controlled, softer bounce and are made to withstand outdoor use and storage.
Additional Features
Some trampoline mats are personalised with coloured fabric being woven in to the standard black material. A woven or painted center cross is also becoming more common in recreational trampolines and is already a required feature on a competitive mat. Other custom features include UV-protected stitching, waterproof covers and additional perimeter pads.
