Get An Old Faucet Off Of A Sink

Replace your faucet to bring a more modern look to your room.

Replacing a faucet is a quick way to give a kitchen or a bathroom a face lift. Old fixtures and finishes may cause a bathroom to look dated or have structural or functional flaws causing them to not work properly. Despite the many varieties of faucets and different manufacturers, faucets generally have the same basic installation principles. Removing a faucet is a task that can be achieved in about an hour with common household tools.

Instructions

1. Turn off the water supply to the sink. Look under your sink for shutoff valves If none are present, shut off the water at the main.

2. Turn on the faucet to bleed out any water remaining in the pipes. Be sure to turn on both the hot and cold sides to ensure there are no surprises.

3. Disconnect the water supply lines from the bottom of the faucet. Use a wrench, if necessary, to loosen the fittings. Disconnect the sprayer hose, if it is present, from the rest of the faucet assembly. Have a bucket or rags handy to catch any last water remaining in the pipes.

4. Unscrew the tailpiece mounting nuts underneath the sink. You may need to utilize a basin wrench if the fittings are tight.

5. Slide a razor blade around the base of the faucet on the top of the sink to remove any caulking that may be present.

6. Lift the old faucet off the sink and set it aside. Scrape the remaining caulking or putty from around the holes and clean the area with rubbing alcohol.

Tips Warnings

Wear safety goggles if you are concerned about debris underneath the sink falling into your eyes.
