Use fake glow sticks for filming club scenes.
Glow sticks are commonly seen waving through the air in the hands of club dancers, and such movement is referred to as glowsticking. The sticks were invented by Bell Labs chemist Edwin Chandross more than 40 years ago as a chemical energy source of light, and have since gained popularity at concerts, festivals, nightclubs and raves. You can create faux glow stick shapes as props for theatrical productions, videos and other artistic endeavors, and then learn to make glow stick shapes as you wave them around.
Instructions
Faux Glow Sticks
1. Use a candle that is about the same width as a glow stick, which generally are a little less than an inch in diameter.
2. Cut off the wider and thinner ends of the candle with a knife so that you have a uniformly shaped stick. Cut as much off both ends as needed.
3. Color the candle with fluorescent or glow-in-the-dark paint if desired. Allow to dry before use.
Making Glowstick Shapes
4. Hold one glow stick with your hand in the air. Bring the glow stick down in front of your diagonally. For example, if holding the glow stick with your left hand, bring the stick down to your right waist area.
5. Invert your hand so the glow stick is facing up in your palm. Bring your hand across your waist and back up to the opposite side of your starting point -- if you started with your left hand in the air on your left side, your hand should now be in the air on your right side.
6. Keep your hand in the air and bring it across to your original starting place. This completes a figure 8 glow stick shape. Practice the figure 8 shapes multiple times until you feel comfortable, then start practicing a figure 8 using two glow sticks if desired.
Tips Warnings
Paper towel rolls and rulers also can be used to make faux glow sticks.
Other basic glowsticking shapes include inverted figure 8s, and tracing, where you trace the glow stick all over your body as though you were painting with the stick.
