Are Sunflowers Toxic To Cats

Sunflowers are nontoxic to cats, dogs and horses.

Sunflowers are beautiful growing outside or placed in a vase inside the home. While pet owners must be careful which plants they place in their home or yard, they should not worry about the sunflower, which is nontoxic to domestic animals.

Identification

The sunflower is an annual herb that blooms from June to September each year. Sunflowers have hairy stems, ovate or heart-shaped lower leaves and small upper leaves. The center of the sunflower is maroon in color and is surrounded by bright yellow petals. Sunflowers originated in North America, which is home to approximately 60 species of sunflower. Sunflowers grow in abundance in the Great Plains areas and Canada.

Potential

Sunflowers are nontoxic to cats, dogs and horses, according to the ASPCA. However, the ingestion of any plant material can cause undesirable symptoms in animals.

Effects

Cats that ingest any plant material can have symptoms such as vomiting, depression and diarrhea. Reactions are usually mild, but a cat with ongoing symptoms should visit its veterinarian for a full evaluation.
