Replace Orings In A Kohler Faucet

The O-rings in a Kohler faucet help maintain the watertight seal necessary to keep the water in the faucet from leaking out the faucet's base. Kohler states that the design of its faucets is simple enough that a homeowner can replace the O-rings without having to call a plumber for help. You only need common tools to replace the O-rings on the Kohler faucet, as well as a few moments of your time.

Instructions

1. Shut off the flow of water to the faucet by closing the main water valve in the house. Turn on another faucet, if possible on a lower level of the house, to relieve any pressure left in the water pipes.

2. Pull out the small rubber plug at the base of the faucet's handle. Loosen but do not remove the screw at the base of the handle, then pull the handle off the faucet.

3. Twist the metal dome underneath the faucet handle, called the bonnet, counterclockwise with your hand to remove it from the faucet. Pull up firmly on the spout to remove it from the faucet assembly, exposing the O-rings and bearings that were previously hidden.

4. Slide a small flathead screwdriver underneath each O-ring to pull it out of its channel in the faucet, then slide the O-rings off the faucet assembly. Apply an even coating of plumber's grease to the new O-rings, then slide them in the channels on the faucet assembly where the old O-rings were located.

5. Reassemble the faucet in the reverse order you took it apart. Open the main water valve in the house and inspect the base of the faucet to ensure it no longer leaks.
