Determine When A Michelin Tire Was Made

Your Michelin tire's date of manufacturing is stamped on the sidewall.

Like most things, tires have an expiration date of sorts. Dryrot and other deterioration can occur with age, so knowing the age of the tire can help you avoid older tires that may have a higher risk of dangerous failure. The date of manufacturing is stamped on the sidewall of the tire, pursuant to regulations imposed by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and tells you the year and week of the year of manufacturing.

Instructions

1. Look for a large series of letters and numbers that start with DOT, stamped on the side of your tire, near the rim. If you cannot find it, look on the other side, since regulation only dictate the date be stamped on one side. There should be 10, 11 or 12 letters and numbers following DOT.

2. Look for the numbers at the end of the series. There will either be three or four numbers after a series of letters.

3. Analyze the first two digits as the week of manufacturing. For example, if the numbers were 1206, the 12 represents week 12 of the year of manufacturing. If the numbers were 519, then 51 represents week 51.

4. Analyze the remaining numbers. There should be either one or two digits remaining. Two digits represents the year, while a single digit represents the year of some decade before 2000. For example, in the numbers 1206, the 06 represents the year 2006. In the numbers 519, the 9 represents the ninth year of some decade without further clarification, although you know it's before 2000 and greater than 10 years old.
