Pack rats build nests inside or against trees.
Pack rats, also known as wood rats or trading rats, are gray or brown with bushy tails and white abdomens. They thrive in hot, dry climates and can be found extensively throughout desert regions in North America. The rats collect bits of loose material to construct or decorate their nests. Unfortunately, they'll often raid homes and businesses in their quest and wreak havoc in attics, garages and inside walls. According to DesertUSA.com, they especially like small, shiny objects, a concern for those keeping jewelry or small electronics around the house (see Reference 1). Pack rats can cause damage to electrical wiring, insulation and steal material possessions, but it's not difficult to eradicate them from your home.
Instructions
1. Buy snap traps at your local hardware store. Be sure they are rat traps and not mouse traps; rat traps are much larger and more powerful.
2. Bait the traps with peanut butter or cheese. Peanut butter works best because it's harder for the rats to steal.
3. Set the traps around the perimeter and inside your house, especially in areas where you think the rats are entering.
4. Listen for the sounds of the traps snapping. Check the traps hourly or daily.
5. Dispose of dead rats using gloves. A mask and goggles is also recommended if you're in an area dense with rat feces or urine. Place dead rats into two plastic bags.
6. Clean areas contaminated with rat droppings and urine by vacuuming the feces and using a weak bleach solution to scrub away urine traces.

According to GetRidofThings.com, snap traps are the most effective way to dispose of rats. Glue traps will trap them but are almost impossible to remove, which is unpleasant when dealing with a frightened, defensive rat (see Reference 2). Seal up cracks or openings in your house to deter future infestations.
Like other rats, pack rats can carry diseases. If the infestation is too large, call a professional exterminator to conduct a thorough removal and give an estimate for cleaning costs.
