While manufacturers do not recommend steam cleaning for laminate floors, you can use certain types of steam mops to clean laminate wood floors. Laminate wood is a combination of wood, plastic and resins to create a floor that resembles hardwood but is cheaper and more repellent to stains and buckling.
Choosing a Steam Mop
Never use any steam cleaning machine that does not advertise its ability to clean laminate floors. Check the steam cleaner's owner's manual to determine if it is cleared for use on laminate floors. Most steam cleaning machines that are safe to use will be referred to as steam mops. Unlike heavy-duty steam cleaning machines, steam mops use a very small amount of steam that will not soak the laminate floors.
Using a Steam Mop
To use a steam mop, fill the tank with water. Plug the mop in and wait for it to heat up. Normally there is a light that will indicate when it has reached temperature. Turn the mop on and push it over the surface of the laminate until you've covered the entire floor and it is completely clean. Change the microfiber mop head as soon as it has become covered in dirt.
Steam Mop Dangers
Laminate floors are susceptible to moisture and especially hot moisture such as steam. Using the wrong steam cleaner on laminate floors will push the moisture deep into the floor's pores and crevices. Using the steam cleaner once might not cause permanent issues, but using it repeatedly will eventually cause buckling and rot.
Purchasing a Steam Mop
Purchase steam mops from hardware stores and home improvement stores. Consider purchasing them directly from a manufacturer such as Bissell or Swiffer. Always ask the representative if the steam mop is cleared for use on laminate floors and double check the owner's manual to confirm.
