Your little girl will feel special in her own tutu.
Wearing a tutu makes a little girl feel special and nearly every girl would love to have one of her own. Tutus are a must-have item for playing dress-up, ideal for twirling and dancing, and perfect for a fancy tea party with her dolls. Making a tutu is a simple process and takes only a few hours. Presenting her with a homemade tutu might just put you in the category of hero. This could be the garment she never wants to take off.
Instructions
1. Use tulle in bright, playful colors.
Measure the girl from the waist to the knee. That measurement will provide the length of the finished tutu. Adjust accordingly if you want the tutu to be longer or shorter. Cut 25 pieces of tulle. The cut pieces will measure six inches wide by double the knee-to-waist measurement.
2. Place the elastic around the girl's waist. Cut the elastic one inch longer than her waist measurement. Sew the ends of the elastic together, either by hand or on the sewing machine. Loop the elastic around the back of a chair to make it easier to put together the tutu.
3. Lay two pieces of tulle together. If you are using two colors, put two different pieces together, or use the same color and alternate the next pieces with a different color. Fold in half in the middle to make a U shape.
4. Hold the tulle behind the elastic with the fold just above it. Take the ends, bring up and over the elastic and pull through the loop in the folded end. Pull tightly so the tulle is secure on the elastic.
5. Continue working your way around the tutu until you have all the elastic covered. Cut more tulle pieces if you have elastic that is still bare. The tulle can be tightly pushed together and more tulle can be added if you want a finished product that is very full.
6. Spread the tutu out on the floor in a circle and adjust the strips of tulle to make them even.
7. Add silk flowers to the hem of the tutu with glue or a needle and thread for a special look.
