Roast Chestnuts In An Electric Oven

Roast chestnuts in an electric oven instead of over an open fire.

Roasted chestnuts do not require an open fire. Prepare these starchy nuts without an open flame in an electric oven. Slitting the nuts requires time before roasting them, but this important step prevents the shells from exploding as they cook in the oven. Save time by using the broiler function on some electric ovens.

Instructions

1. Preheat the broiler of an electric oven to high or the main oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Grasp an individual chestnut inside of a towel with the flat side exposed and pointing up.

3. Cut an "x" into the flat side of each chestnut shell to facilitate shelling and prevent explosions.

4. Scatter the chestnuts in a single layer on a baking pan.

5. Broil the chestnuts for three minutes on high or roast at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 to 30 minutes or until the shells split.

6. Cool the chestnuts on the baking sheet until they are cool enough to handle.

7. Hold each chestnut in the towel and pull the shell off with your fingers.
