Remove A Water Restrictor From Delta Faucets

Remove a Water Restrictor From Delta Faucets

Faucet manufacturers install flow restrictors in their shower heads and sink faucets. Flow restrictors are necessary to meet many state and local plumbing guidelines to reduce water consumption. Delta does not advise removing the water restrictor completely from the faucet. To increase water pressure from your faucet, remove the water restrictor from the Delta faucet and either clean or replace it.

Instructions

1. Place a rag in the sink drain to prevent dropping small parts down the drain.

2. Wrap masking tape around the faucet aerator of your Delta faucet. The aerator is the piece on the end of the faucet spout. The masking tape protects the finish of the aerator while you remove it from the faucet.

3. Grab the aerator with a pair of slip joint pliers and turn it counterclockwise until you can turn it by hand. Continue unscrewing the aerator off the end of the faucet spout by hand.

4. Remove the rubber washer on the inside of the aerator with your fingers. Pull the water restrictor out of the aerator. The water restrictor resembles a flat washer with a single small hole in the center. Clean the restrictor in a solution of vinegar and water, or replace the restrictor with a new one.

5. Place the restrictor and the rubber washer back into the aerator. Thread the aerator back into the end of the faucet spout until it is tight. Turn the aerator another one-quarter turn with the slip joint pliers. Remove the tape from the aerator.

Tips Warnings

If you opt to remove the restrictor from the aerator permanently, install a new rubber washer. The old washer may leak due to being formed around the flow restrictor.
