Deflood A Mazda Rx8

De-flood a Mazda RX-8

The Mazda RX-8 is a high-performance vehicle that must be maintained with the utmost care and attention. The unique rotary engine is susceptible to flooding, which is caused by excess fuel being deposited into the rotor housing, soaking the spark plugs. When an RX-8 is flooded, the car will not start. Mazda suggests a unique de-flooding procedure in order to get your vehicle up and running. If this basic procedure does not work, you may need to have the vehicle towed to a dealer.

Instructions

1. Press the accelerator all the way down and crank the engine for 8 seconds -- cranking the engine means to turn the key as if you were starting the vehicle. By doing this, you ensure that any excess fuel or residue is burned off. If the engine starts during this step, you will immediately notice that the car revs up. At that point, release the key and take your foot off the gas pedal.

2. Release the key, but keep the accelerator pressed for three more seconds.

3. Release the accelerator pedal.

4. Attempt to start the engine. If the engine does not start after you have completed the de-flooding process, attempt the procedure two more times (as suggested by Mazda). If, after the third time, the car does not start, you will need to have it towed to the nearest Mazda dealership.

Tips Warnings

Do not race the engine after the de-flooding procedure has been completed.

Do not keep the engine cranking for more than 8 to 10 seconds. Perform this step in intervals.
