Unique 50th Birthday Card Ideas

A momentous occasion.

Turning half a century old is a memorable experience that can be captured on a birthday card in many ways. In addition to any personal touches, you have the luxury of 50 years of history to include and reminisce about. Choose a look at history, a dig at getting older, a wish for 50 more years, or a combination of all three for a birthday card that will be kept until next century.

Through the Decades

Remember each decade in all its glory.

Use the front of the card to take a brief look back at each decade the birthday boy or girl has experienced. For a bonus, capture a photo of him or her in each decade. You needn't find an actual photo. For instance, use an image of his or her head, and paste it onto several "cliche" images--a hippie for the 1970s, a New Wave rocker for the 1980s.

On the inside of the card, write your personal greeting and include a tag relevant to the front of the card: For example: "Here's to five more decades of fun fads and bad hairdos. Happy Birthday!"

Notable Year

On this special day...

Thanks to the Internet, we have the power to find out why every year is "notable." There may not have been any groundbreaking news--such as the discovery of an important vaccine, or the birth of a rock star--but each year has something of historical value. Do research about your birthday boy's or girl's birth year, and make a list of your five favorite events.

On the front of the card, write the message:

"A lot of notable things began in (insert the year)."

(Next list the events.)

Finally finish the card on the inside pages by writing: "...and the most important: YOU!"

50 Things

Get cracking on that checklist.

For an ambitious card, compile a list of 50 things about the birthday boy or girl. This is a good approach for a close friend or relative who knows a lot about the card recipient. You can list reasons you're proud of the recipient, why you love him or her, or any other sentimental thing you can think of.

For an alternative list, you can get silly and list things they still haven't done. Label the front of the card: "Happy 50th Birthday! I bet you think you've done everything, but I beg to differ!" This gives you permission to write absurd activities like: "Eaten an entire plate of worms," or "Figured out how many licks it takes to get to the inside of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop." On the inside page, write: "Better get cracking!" or some sort of dig at the birthday boy or girl completing your list of crazy obstacles.
