Roast Spanish Nuts

Roasted Spanish peanuts make a healthy snack option.

Peanuts come from ancient Peru, where people used them as offerings to the sun god. In the mid-1800s, while working at the Tuskegee Institute, George Washington Carver invented more than 300 peanut products ranging from soap to peanut ice cream. Peanuts are a healthy snack containing B vitamins, folic acid, magnesium, iron and zinc. Spanish peanuts have the smallest kernels. You can easily roast them at home using personal flavorings. This process also allows control of the salt content.

Instructions

Roasting Peanuts

1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and assemble all the ingredients on your counter top. Use an oven-safe thermometer to accurately measure the heat.

2. Remove the peanuts from the shell. Boil some water. Put the peanuts in the the mixing bowl, and pour the hot water over top. This blanches the nuts and makes the skin easy to remove. Drain the nuts and let them dry completely before seasoning them.

3. Dry the mixing bowl and return the cooled nuts. Toss the peanuts with the oil and spices. Mix completely. Sprinkle in honey powder if desired.

4. Spread the peanuts evenly on baking pans. Roast them in the oven for 15-20 minutes. Check them at the 15 minute mark for doneness. Cool and store in an airtight container.
