Keep Chopped Lettuce From Wilting

Chopped lettuce is a good ingredient for salads and other cold dishes.

Chopped lettuce is used in salads or as a topping for hot foods such as tacos or hamburgers. However, chopped lettuce wilts easily if not properly cared for and stored in the right way. You can either buy chopped lettuce in a bag or get a whole head of lettuce, chop it in pieces yourself, then put it in a bag to store for later use.

Instructions

1. Purchase lettuce that is fresh. Pick a head of lettuce that feels heavy, because this means it has a lot of moisture in it. Also look for the lettuce with the most crisp leaves, and avoid ones that have yellowish or brown leaves with spots on them -- indicating they aren't fresh.

2. Wash the lettuce, wrap it in some paper towels, and store it in a sealed container or a large storage bag in your refrigerator. Your lettuce should stay fresh for seven to 10 days.

3. Don't store your lettuce next to apples, pears, plums, avocados, melons or tomatoes. These fruits and vegetables give off ethylene gas as they soften, and this will cause the lettuce to wilt. Instead, store the lettuce by itself in the refrigerator drawer.
