Foods That Give You Quick Energy

Foods That Give You Quick Energy

Need to jump start your workout? Trying to get yourself from work, through errands, to dinner without making a stop at the nearest candy machine or fast food restaurant? The key is planning ahead. Have some healthier snacks at your desk and in your car to help you keep going.

Fruit

Try a banana as a mid-morning snack and an orange in the afternoon. Dried fruits are also great for fast energy. Considered simple carbohydrates, the sugars in fruit break down quickly in your body, giving you the kick you need to keep going to your next meal.

Peanut Butter

Protein in general can perk you up, but peanut butter is easy to take on the go for that extra pick-me-up. Try it on whole grain bread or crackers, apple slices or celery.

Nuts

Almonds and chestnuts are some of the best low-fat, high-energy nuts that are easy to add to your diet. Nuts can be added to recipes, yogurt or eaten straight from the package as you drive down the road. Trail mix is another quick fuel option.

Chocolate

While not the best choice, a piece of chocolate does have the caffeine and sugar to get you going for a short time. Avoid milk chocolate, as dark chocolate has more antioxidants and fewer calories. Be sure to follow the serving size.

Considerations

While candy bars, soda, coffee and energy bars/drinks do give you a sugar boost, the crash comes quickly and can sometimes make you feel worse than you did before. Calorie and fat contents will likely be higher too.
