Determine If Fresh Oysters Are Bad

The consumption of raw food can be dangerous if the food in question has spoiled. Spoiled oysters contain the bacteria Vibrio Vulnificus; their consumption can lead to illness. Symptoms associated with the ingestion of bad oysters include nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea and intense stomach cramps. These symptoms will generally manifest within a few hours of consumption and last for a few days. It is important to watch for the tell tale signs that your oysters are past their prime.

Instructions

1. Examine the oyster's to make sure it is completely closed, if they are not served on the half shell. One sign that the oyster is no longer fit for consumption is if the shell has begun to open, and its contents are oozing out the side.

2. Smell the oyster. If it appears to have the odor of rotten eggs, they have gone bad and should not be consumed.

3. Examine the consistency of the oyster itself. The contents should be smooth and shiny. Oysters that are dried out and appeared shrunken and shriveled are rotten.
