Potato Chip Making Tools

Making your own potato chips is easy with the right tools.

Potato chips are one of the most popular snack foods out there. They're salty, crunchy and great for munching. Unfortunately, store-bought potato chips are often made with unhealthy fats and excessive amounts of salt. Making your own potato chips is much healthier and less expensive. With the right tools and a little bit time and effort, you can make delicious potato chips.

Potatoes

Yukon Gold or Idaho potatoes are best for chips.

The best-tasting potato chips are made from either Yukon Gold or Idaho potatoes. Wash and dry them thoroughly before slicing. You can either peel them or leave the peels intact before slicing.

Slicing

A mandolin will make slicing potatoes fast and easy.

Use a mandolin slicer to cut your potatoes into 1/8-inch thick slices. Be very careful when using the mandolin, and use the guard to protect your fingers.

Seasoning

There are many options for seasoning potato chips.

Homemade potato chips can be seasoned in many different ways. Many people prefer just a sprinkle of salt. Other possible seasonings include garlic powder, dry basil, rosemary, parmesan cheese and cracked black pepper.

Cooking the Chips

Potato chips can either be baked or fried in oil.

There are two basic options for cooking potato chips. One is to spread the potato chips on a cookie sheet and bake them in the oven. The other is to fry them in oil. A deep fryer is not necessary; a frying pan or saute pan with high sides will do.

Cooling

After cooking the potato chips, they will need to cool for a few minutes. If they were baked in the oven, they can cool on the cookie sheet. If they were fried in oil, transfer them to a plate or cooling rack lined with paper towels.
