Rainbow trout represent a triple threat to the freshwater angler: they put up a tremendous fight, are beautiful fish and taste delicious when broiled, poached or simply pan fried. Rainbows subsist on a diet consisting mainly of insects, worms and small baitfish such as minnows. This species of trout will also rise from a clear pool to strike homemade bait made of cheese and garlic. Bait balls can be made at home with a bit of flour and cornmeal to hold them together.
Instructions
1. Melt the cheese in a mixing bowl placed in a microwave oven.
2. Add all other ingredients and stir until blended to form a dough mixture.
3. Fill a saucepan with water and set on the stove to boil.
4. Form the dough into individual balls, each about the size of a marble.
5. Drop the dough balls into the water a few at a time and boil for 2 minutes.
6. Fish out the bait balls with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to cool and dry.
7. Store the bait balls in resealable plastic bags. Snack-size bags are good for measuring out quantities of baitballs that can be frozen until ready for fishing. Simply grab as many bags as you need and head for the trout stream.
