Healthy Snack Foods for Children

Having healthy snack foods in the house for children is an important part of a parent's job. With the constant advertising for junk food, every child needs to be reminded that eating well is essential to living a long, healthy life. Start choosing healthy snack foods for children instead of sugar-filled garbage that can actually harm your child's health. Below are a few suggestions to help get you started.

Fruits

Peaches, melons, berries, oranges, apples and other fruits are very healthy snack foods for children. Keep these cut up in the refrigerator so your child can easily grab his favorite fruit for a snack.

Vegetables

Serve your child sliced cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower or grape tomatoes and baby carrots for an after-school snack. Add a small amount of her favorite dressing for dipping the vegetables in.

Yogurt

Yogurt is an easy and quick snack filled with health benefits. Choose from a variety of flavors or buy unflavored or vanilla and add your child's favorite fruit.

Dried Fruit

Dried fruit is a great and healthy snack food for children. Pick from a variety of plain dried fruits or choose those coated with yogurt or chocolate.

Nuts and Seeds

Keep a bowl of mixed nuts and seeds on the counter for your child. Add some dried fruit, miniature marshmallows and chocolate chips to make your own child-friendly trail mix.

Granola Bars

Granola bars come in a huge variety of kid-friendly flavors. Choose a brand that is low in sugar and preservatives.

Popcorn

Natural popcorn is one of the best healthy snack foods for children. Sprinkle with grated cheese and a small amount of salt or garlic powder.
