Nothing smells or tastes better than fresh homemade yeast biscuits right out of the oven. They don't have to be for Thanksgiving or a special dinner anymore because making yeast biscuits, sometimes called angel biscuits, isn't as hard as it seems. Nowadays one doesn't even have to wait half the day for the dough to rise before enjoying these tasty treats.
Instructions
1. Open a packet of yeast into a small bowl. Add ? cup of lukewarm water. Let sit for 5 minutes until dissolved. The yeast will look foamy.
2. Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Cut in the shortening, mixing until the consistency of large peas.
3. Add buttermilk and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix well. The dough will be a little sticky.
4. Roll the dough out onto a well-floured surface using a floured rolling pin, making the final thickness about ? inch thick.
5. Cut yeast biscuits with a biscuit cutter and place them onto a lightly greased cookie sheet. Let dough rise for 15 to 20 minutes in a warm place with a dish towel over the top.
6. Bake biscuits in a 400 degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes. Serve warm.
