Make Bread Balls

Make bread balls to serve as either a sweet dessert or snack. Serve them as side dishes or appetizers by varying the fillings with savory seasonings and bits of vegetables or meats. The process is quick and easy and can be prepared in a few minutes but tastes like you slaved all day in the kitchen.

Instructions

1. Cut the crusts from a loaf of white or wheat bread. Tear the slices into small pieces and place in large bowl with a cup of milk. Set aside for about 10 minutes to soak. Make sure all the pieces are well soaked to form into balls.

2. Add seasoning to the mixture and any filling that you desire. Use the same basic recipe for both sweet and savory balls. Some filling items are sauteed onion, raisins, cranberries, grated cheese, chopped nuts or small bits of meat. Add one beaten egg and stir.

3. Mix well and take out small amounts of dough, rolling into balls and roll in bread crumbs. When forming the balls, squeeze the excess liquid from the dough. Place them on a dish until you have formed all the balls.

4. Heat a pot of oil to 375 degrees. Drop the balls into the oil and turn periodically to make sure that you brown all sides. Remove from the hot oil and drain on a paper towel. Allow to cool.

5. Sprinkle with a bit of powdered sugar or drizzle with honey if making sweet balls. For savory balls, arrange on a plate with a dipping sauce. BBQ, ranch and sweet-and-sour sauces work well.
