Select Cheese To Accompany White Wine

There are many varieties and flavors of white wine to choose from, and there is also a wide range of foods that can be paired with it. Cheese is a popular option for wine pairings. A few basic rules of thumb can help you determine the perfect cheese to go with your favorite white wine.

Instructions

1. Choose cheese that is as light as your wine. The smoother, milder fruitier flavors of lighter colored cheeses, like gruyere or Jarlsberg, pair better with white wine than sharper flavored cheeses, like cheddar, which could overpower the taste of the wine. Use the basic guideline of choosing lighter cheeses to go with a lighter wine, and you'll be sure to find a complimentary pairing.

2. Pull out your atlas. White wines come from all over the world and taste different depending on where they are from. Finding cheeses from the same corner of the globe is a fun way to add a little international flair to your wine pairing.

3. Find fun fruits. If you are serving a wine with fruity notes or undertones, pair it with a cheese that contains some of these same fruits. Specialty cheese shops and even some grocery stores carry exotic blends of cheese and cheese dips that contain blueberries, cranberries and other fruits that will be an interesting compliment to your wine choice.

4. Get nutty. Cheese balls rolled in crushed nuts or cheese trays that include different types of nuts are a great accompaniment to white wines. The earthiness and saltiness of the nuts are a palatable contrast to the sweetness of the wine, while the crunch balances out the smooth texture characteristic of most light cheeses.

5. Change it up. Everyone tastes things in a different way so wine and cheese pairings will taste good to some and not so favorable to others. Eliminate this problem by providing a variety of cheeses instead of just one or two kinds so that everyone you are dining with will be able to find the cheese that best compliments white wine according to his or her unique palate.
