Make Hawaiian Gon Lo Mein

Gon lo mein, a noodle dish served frequently in Hawaii, takes little time to make and produces large servings. Oyster sauce, mushrooms, green onion and other vegetables combine with lo mein noodles and char siu (Chinese barbecued meat, usually pork) to make an Asian-inspired meal. You can serve this dish as a side paired with roasted meat or barbecue. Make some gon lo mein and bring a little piece of Hawaii into your home.

Instructions

1. Arrange the contents of three 10-oz. packages of chow mein noodles in a 13" x 9" x 2" baking pan so that they all fit.

2. Pour 1/4 cup of oyster sauce and 1 tbsp. of sesame oil onto the noodles.

3. Bake the noodles in the oven at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes.

4. Heat 1 tbsp. sesame oil in a wok, and add 8 dried mushrooms that have been soaked and sliced; 6 chopped green onions; a 12-oz. package of bean sprouts; 4 slivered celery stalks; 1/2 cup sliced Chinese peas; 2 tsp. fish sauce and a 12-oz. package of sliced green beans.

5. Stir-fry the vegetables for two minutes.

6. Season the vegetables with 1/2 tsp. salt and 1/2 tsp. monosodium glutamate. Mix in 3/4 lb. of thinly sliced char siu.

7. Pour the mixture from the wok into a serving bowl. Add the noodles and toss with a spoon while pouring 1/2 cup of oyster sauce over the dish.
