Reconstitute Sun Dried Tomatoes

There's more than one way to reconstitute sun-dried tomatoes. These dried tomatoes, usually dried at the peak of ripeness, reconstitute into as much as four times the size as the dried amount. Reconstituting dried tomatoes must include some kind of moisture to restore the moisture in the tomatoes. But there are a few different liquid options you can use; all produce soft, pliable tomatoes.

Instructions

With Liquids

1. Place the sun-dried tomatoes in a bowl.

2. Add enough liquid to completely cover the tomatoes. Choose from liquid options, such as warm water, any flavor of stock or wine.

3. Allow the mixture to sit for at least 30 minutes and for up to two hours. Start checking the tomatoes after 30 minutes since reconstituting times can vary by tomato size; some are ready within 30 minutes, while others take up to two hours to completely reconstitute.

4. Remove one tomato from the bowl and feel its texture. It should feel soft, with no dried parts left.

5. Drain the liquid from the tomatoes. Use the tomatoes in your recipes as directed.

Adding to Soups or Stews

6. Cook your soup or stew recipe as directed.

7. Wait until the last 20 to 30 minutes of cooking time.

8. Add the sun-dried tomatoes to the pot to finish cooking. By the time the soup or stew is done, the tomatoes should have a soft texture.
