What Are Soy Crisps

Soy crisps are baked soy "chips" made from a combination of soy and rice flour. They are a low-calorie and low-fat snacking alternative to fried potato and buttery-baked wheat products and are available in a wide variety of flavors.

Soy

Soy is a low-fat alternative to potato chips that will give you more energy (due to the presence of soy protein) when you are snacking. Adding soy to your diet may also benefit your cardiovascular health, because it can help to reduce cholesterol. Genisoy crisps are comprised (per serving) of 7 g of soy protein and 3 g of fat.

Baked

Because soy crisps are baked, they are lower in fat than potato chips, which require oil for cooking. Baking allows the crisp to keep all the flavor of a nacho-cheese chip and still be considered a healthy, low-calorie snacking alternative.

Sodium

To make soy crisps as tasty (or tastier) than potato chips, most brands use a very high amount of sodium. Some crisps have as much as three times the amount of sodium as potato chips. As such, if you are on a low-sodium diet, your consumption of crisps should be moderated.

Flavors

Soy crisps come in many flavors, including cheddar cheese, barbecue, salt & vinegar, nacho, roasted garlic & onion, ranch, and apple and cinnamon.

Brands

The big brands behind soy crisps (chips) include Genisoy Soy Crisps, Glenny's Soy Crisps, Stacy's Thin Crisps and Atkins Crunchers. As of 2009, prices range from $0.99 and $2.69.
