Popcorn Project Ideas

Popcorn can be used to make many different whimsical craft projects.

When making homemade crafts with your children, it can sometimes be difficult or costly to find the supplies and materials you need to make the projects. One alternative is to use simple materials that can be found around your house, such as plain popcorn. With popcorn, a wide variety of whimsical and useful crafts projects can be created.

Popcorn Handprint Sheep

Make popcorn handprint sheep at Easter time. Instruct the child to place his hand onto a piece of pink construction paper. Trace around each hand with a pencil. Cut out each hand with scissors. Apply glue to the palm of the handprint cut out, then place popped popcorn onto the glued palm. This will be the sheep's wool. Turn the hand so that the fingers are pointing down. The four fingers will be the sheep's legs. Draw an eye onto the end of the thumb. You can create many different popcorn handprint sheep to hang up as a festive garland.

Popcorn Blossom Tree

Celebrate the coming of spring, when all of the fruiting trees are in bloom, with a popcorn blossom tree. Start by providing each child with a sheet of construction paper, any color. Each child should draw a tree trunk and branches onto the sheet of construction paper with markers, crayons or colored pencils. Apply dollops of craft glue around the branches. Place pieces of popped popcorn onto the dollops of glue. These will be the flowering blossoms of the spring fruit tree. Allow the popcorn blossom tree to dry completely before displaying it.

Popcorn Glove Turkey

Create a 3D popcorn glove turkey for Thanksgiving. Each child will need one clear plastic glove, colored tissue paper, popped popcorn and red construction paper. Start by tearing colored tissue paper into small pieces, then stuffing the fingers of the clear plastic glove with the tissue paper. These will be the turkey's colorful feathers. Stuff the thumb and palm of the glove with popped popcorn, then glue the bottom closed. Cut out a 5" circle from red construction paper, as well as a 1" teardrop shape. This will be the stand for the turkey. Glue the base of palm of the glove to the circle. Glue the teardrop shape under the thumb to form the turkey's wattles. Draw eyes onto the popcorn glove turkey with a black marker.
