Make Glug

Glug is a hot drink of red wine, fruit, spices and brandy.

Glug (also called "glog" or "glogg") is Scandinavia's more potent cousin to mulled wine. It's a steamy ruby-hued brew of red wine, spices, fresh citrus peel, dried fruit (specifically raisins), slivered almonds, and a generous pour of a mischievous distilled spirit like brandy. Glug is a liquid blanket for chilly nights and a festive drink for holiday gatherings. While it simmers on your kitchen stove, it fills your home with the scent of oranges and cloves. When ready to sip, it soaks your insides with a pleasing sweet-spiked heat. Think heaven--with a delicious kick--in a cup.

Instructions

1. Place wine, brandy, spices, orange peel and dried cherries in a pot. Simmer for about twenty minutes until heated through (make sure not to boil the glug; boiling will burn off the alcohol and can alter the taste).

2. Add 1/2 cup of brown sugar and stir until dissolved. Taste. If more sweetness is desired, add 1 tablespoon of brown sugar at a time until your sweet tooth is satisfied. To remove fruit and spices filter with a strainer.

3. Sprinkle a teaspoon each of golden raisins and slivered almonds in the bottom of a ceramic or glass mug. Pour glug in mugs and enjoy. Skal! (That's Swedish for cheers).
