Halloween Popcorn Ball Decorating Ideas

Homemade popcorn balls are a beloved Halloween treat.

Halloween is a time for ghoulish costumes and sweet treats. One of the classic sweet favorites of the Halloween season are popcorn balls which are made by mixing popped corn with caramel, melted marshmallows, corn syrup or molasses to bind the corn into a ball shape. To help bring the Halloween theme to this favorite treat, decorate your popcorn balls with signs of the season.

Candy Coating

Drizzle chocolate or white chocolate candy around the popcorn ball and let it dry. For a more Halloween specific look, add orange or black food coloring to the white chocolate and dip your popcorn ball into the mixture. Once it hardens and cools, you can further accent your popcorn ball with decorative accents made of black licorice or more candy coating.

Non-Edible Additions

Fabric can be used to create a Halloween theme on your popcorn balls. Simply poke a straw or popsicle stick into the center of the popcorn ball. Cut a piece of fabric to wrap completely around the popcorn ball and tie it to the popsicle stick with a decorative piece of ribbon. Decorate the fabric to match your Halloween theme.

For example, paint a piece of white fabric with eyes and a mouth to look like a ghost or paint an orange piece of fabric to resemble a jack-o-lantern. A green piece of fabric can be painted to look like a witch, especially if a black paper hat is glued atop the popcorn ball. Another way to personalize your popcorn ball is to made it resemble a spider. Cut eight pieces of black pipe cleaner, four to five inches in length. Arrange them in the sides of your popcorn ball to look like spider legs.

Tasty Add-Ins

Another way to add colorful interest to a popcorn ball is to mix candy into the popcorn mixture before forming the balls. To complement your Halloween theme, try dying your popcorn balls with orange food coloring and mixing in pieces of chopped black licorice, candy corn or any other of your favorite Halloween candy. Small gummy pumpkins, caramel, nuts, chocolate pieces or fruit can also be added to your popcorn mixture to enhance your popcorn balls.
