Lemon Drop Pepper Plant

Lemon Drop turns yellow when ripe.

Native to Peru, where it's been used since ancient days, the Lemon Drop pepper (Aji "Lemon Drop") produces a steady crop of yellow hot peppers. Grow plants in containers or in the ground.

Size

Lemon Drop peppers grow 2 1/2 inches long by 1/2 inch wide and turn from green to yellow when ripe. The peppers mature after 100 days. Lemon Drop pepper plants can grow up to 3 feet tall and have green and white flowers.

Significance

Native to Peru, these peppers combine hints of citrus with heat for a unique flavor. Mother Earth News suggests using them in salsa. They're heirloom seeds, so you may need to order them from a specialty shop.

Growing

Start your hot pepper seeds indoors in a seed tray. Moisten the soil mix and cover the seeds. Give them bright light once they germinate. To get strong plants, transplant the seeds into 8-inch pots when they have one set of real leaves. When the soil temperature warms to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, you can move the pots outdoors and grow your peppers in containers.
