New Orleans is famous for its fine seafood and the city's coastal location makes the availability of local seafood plentiful. Purchasing seafood locally can cost the consumer less, has a positive impact on the environment, and benefits the local economy. By knowing where fresh local seafood is available, anyone can easily buy local seafood in New Orleans.
Instructions
1. Visit the Crescent City's Farmers Market (see Resources). On Tuesday mornings in Uptown Square and on Saturday mornings at the corner of Magazine and Girod Streets, Seafood selling vendors set up alongside the produce vendors to provide freshly caught seafood. Depending on the season, market shoppers can purchase shrimp, crawfish, wild catfish, drum and crabs.
2. Cross the Crescent City Connection and go to the Westwego Seafood Market at 100 Westbank Expressway in Westwego. Many fisherman bring their catches directly from their boats to this daily market.
3. Go to Louisiana seafood(see Resources) for a complete list of the New Orleans area stores that sell only Louisiana seafood.
4. Look for the Louisiana Seafood seal at area restaurants. New Orleans restaurateurs are usually proud to serve Louisiana seafood and will either post the Louisiana Seafood seal or state on their menus that they serve only Louisiana seafood. Don't hesitate to ask before ordering.
5. Attend one of the New Orleans area's many seafood-centric festivals. Each year, the Louisiana Oyster Jubilee, Great American Seafood Cook-Off and Louisiana Seafood Festival celebrate local seafood with music, entertainment, and, of course, freshly prepared local seafood.
