Choose A Turkey

Choosing the right turkey can be difficult, because most of us only do it once a year at Thanksgiving. There are a few hard choices you have to make. The way to choose a turkey for your needs will depend on your preferences. If you are more interested in flavor or convenience, you will be more likely to choose a different turkey. Below you'll find a great way to choose the right one for you and your guests.

Instructions

1. Choose a turkey that is the right size for your group. Plan on buying at least one pound of turkey per person. Keep in mind that leftover turkey is always appreciated, so you might want to go with a bigger bird.

2. Get the highest quality turkey that you can afford. Free range turkeys were allowed some access to the outdoors, were generally treated somewhat more humanely, and have a better flavor. Organic turkeys are even better.

3. Consider ordering a heritage turkey ahead of time. Heritage turkeys are descendants of the original breeds raised by the settlers. They have a stronger, more robust flavor and a somewhat different texture. They tend to be raised on traditional farms, which improves the flavor and makes for more humane treatment. Keep in mind that it also raises the price tag.

4. Choose a turkey with the right level of preparation. If you feel up to it, a fresh turkey is your best bet. For the more squeamish or those without a lot of time, the classic cleaned and frozen turkey is the right choice. If you want a minimum of work, consider a self-basted turkey such as that made by Butterball.
