Make No Bake Candies

Creating a treat without going near the stove—or even the microwave—is appealing for many reasons. You’re saving electricity, you’re keeping the house cooler in summer, you can make no-bake candies anywhere, and, of course, there is always a safety issue when kids use the oven. Kids who are old enough to read the directions can tackle these candies without adult supervision, unless of course you’re concerned they’ll eat the whole batch at once.

Instructions

1. Mix together the butter, corn syrup, salt and vanilla.

2. Divide mixture into two bowls. Mix1 pound of powdered sugar into each bowl. Knead the mixture from the first bowl until soft and totally mixed together. Repeat with the other bowl.

3. Divide the kneaded mixture into four parts.

4. Make one part of the mixture into candy oranges. Mix in red and yellow food coloring until mixture turns orange. Shape into small balls and add cloves at the tops.

5. Make a second part of the mixture into stuffed dates. Open the dates and stuff with the mixture and a walnut half.

6. Make the third part of the mixture into peppermint patties. Mix in just a little bit of red food coloring so that the mixture turns pink. Add the chopped peppermint candy. Make into small patty shapes.

7. Make the fourth part of the mixture into Peanut Squares. Mix in peanuts. Pat mixture into a rectangular shape. Cut into squares.

8. Store candies in the refrigerator in a covered container with sheets of waxed paper between layers.
