Fry An Apple

The short answer to the question "Can you fry an apple?" is, absolutely! Fried apples are traditional to the cuisine of the southern United States and are typically served alongside a hearty breakfast. Fried apples are comforting in cool weather, which is, luckily, when apples are in season.

Fry

Cut apples into rings. Dip rings in fry batter and drop them into a deep-fryer or skillet with a half inch of oil. Fry until batter is golden and apples are cooked through, about two to four minutes. To emphasize their doughnut-like appearance, sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Apple Type

A tart, crisp apple works best to give the sugary dish a bit of kick. Granny Smiths are traditionally used in fried apples.

Other Fried Apples

To fry apples without breading them, melt butter in a pan with nutmeg, cinnamon and sugar, and saute apples on medium-low heat for 15 to 20 minutes. Apples prepared in this way are typically served with pork dishes.
