Substitute Prepared Mustard For Dry Mustard

Substituting prepared mustard for dry mustard is relatively simple, but you need to adjust wet ingredients in the recipe.

Dry mustard, also known as mustard powder, is exactly what the name suggests: powdered mustard seeds. Prepared mustard, on the other hand, contains either dry mustard or other crushed or ground mustard seeds along with ingredients including vinegar or sugar. Despite their differences, you can substitute prepared mustard for dry mustard in most recipes. You will need to slightly adjust the moisture that you add to the recipe to compensate for the liquid in the prepared mustard.

Instructions

1. Determine the exact amount of dry mustard in the recipe. For example, consider a recipe that contains 2.5 tsp. of dry mustard.

2. Multiply the amount of dry mustard in the recipe by three to determine the amount of prepared mustard you will need to add. In this example, multiply 2.5 tsp. by 3 for a total of 7.5 tsp., or 2.5 tbsp.

3. Measure out an amount of prepared mustard corresponding to the amount you calculated, then add it to the recipe.

4. Reduce the other liquids in the recipe by approximately the same amount as the recipe requested of dry mustard. In the example, the recipe called for 2.5 tsp. of dry mustard, so reduce the other liquids in the recipe by 2.5 tsp.
