Preserve Hot Sauce

Sanitizing the jars prevents bacterial contamination of the hot sauce.

Hot sauce is a spicy condiment used to enhance the flavor and heat of a variety of foods. It's often incorporated in Asian, Latin, and Cajun cuisines and can be used on a variety of dishes, including meat, seafood, soups, stews, and appetizers. Hot sauce enthusiasts can even concoct their own at home. These individuals, as well as fans of the store-bought variety, can extend the shelf life of their hot sauce by storing it in sanitized jars, a method similar to canning.

Instructions

1. Find an empty glass jar that is free of chips or glass. Make sure the jar has a lid that can be tightly sealed. Two-piece lids are ideal for preserving sauces.

2. Sterilize the jar and lid by washing it thoroughly with soap and hot water. Rinse well and place both on a tray in an oven heated to 175 degrees; leave them in the oven for 25 minutes. Alternatively, you can boil the jar and lid for 15 minutes to sterilize it.

3. Sterilize a pair of metal tongs by dipping the ends in boiling water. Use the tongs to remove the jar from the oven or boiling water. Pour the hot sauce into the jar and seal it as tightly as you can.
