Preserve Grain For Long Periods

Preserve grains for years with the proper storage methods.

Whole grains are optimal foods for long-term storage. Some hard grains have a storage life of as much as 10 to 12 years. To achieve such longevity, the grain must be stored under the proper conditions, including airtight containers, stable temperatures and a dark storage area. Prepared and stored properly, the grain can be as tasty after many years as it was the day it was stored.

Instructions

1. Dry the grain by spreading it in a layer onto a baking sheet. Preheat the oven to 150 degrees Fahrenheit and put the grain in for 10 minutes.

2. Place the dried grain in a half-gallon mason jar with a vacuum-seal lid. Place an oxygen absorber packet in the jar, then put the lid on the jar, making sure the seal is intact.

3. Place the lid attachment hose on the vacuum sealer, then hook the other end of the attachment to the mason jar lid. Turn on the vacuum sealer to remove the air from the jar. Turn the vacuum sealer off and remove the attachment from the lid.

4. Store the jar in a cupboard in a cool, dry, dark place such as a basement. Choose an area with a consistent temperature between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
