Make Gram Flour

Gram flour is made with chickpeas, which are also called garbanzo beans. Chickpea flour or gram four is used in many Indian dishes and is a fine off-white flour with a hint of yellow color. Gram flour is high in iron, protein and fiber and is a gluten free flour. Once you have made your gram flour you can use it to thicken sauces or soups, as an egg substitute, or as flour for gluten-free baked goods.

Instructions

1. Pre-heat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven is heating up, place the dried chickpeas onto a baking sheet with a rim in a single layer and spread them out evenly. Remove any stones or debris you find. Don't use a baking sheet without a side rim as the chickpeas will roll off when you transfer the sheet to and from the oven.

2. Place the baking sheet with dried chickpeas into the oven and bake for 15 minutes or until they are done. The chickpeas will be done roasting when they are golden brown and you can smell their nutty aroma. Put on oven mitts and remove the baking sheet and set it on a cooling rack. Wait 20 minutes for the chickpeas to cool.

3. Add the roasted chickpeas to your food processor, in small batches of 1/2 cup at a time. Turn the food processor on and wait for the first batch of chickpeas to be ground into a powder before adding the next 1/2 cup batch to the food processor. Continue adding roasted chickpeas in batches until they have all been ground into a fine powder to finish making your gram flour.
