This red wine is known by two names. If the wine is produced in Australia or South Africa, it is known as Shiraz. If it comes from France, the United States, Argentina or Chile, it is called Syrah.
Appearance
Shiraz/Syrah grapes are a very dark red in color, so dark in fact that they are often described as black.
Taste
Shiraz as it is made in Australia is a big, bold wine with flavors of blackberry, plum, chocolate and spice. French Syrah shares the same flavor profile as its Australian cousin, but the structure is subtler.
Cellaring
Australian Shiraz is a wine that is meant to be drunk while it is young, preferably within the first five years after bottling.
Serving Shiraz
Serve Shiraz slightly chilled at about 64 degrees F. Pour Shiraz into large glasses so you can enjoy the fragrance of the wine. Shiraz is ideal for beef, and is also an excellent choice for the spicy cuisines of Mexico and India.
