Cook An Extra Large Turkey

Brown the top of the turkey before serving.

Keep your turkey moist and juicy as you cook an extra large turkey. Extra large turkeys are good for large family gatherings, like Thanksgiving, or for a large event where you have many invited guests. Turkey is generally roasted in the oven and served with stuffing on the side. The main difference between cooking an extra large turkey over a smaller turkey is the amount of cooking time and stuffing needed. If you adjust for both and prepare your turkey in a bag, you will enjoy a succulent meal.

Instructions

1. Tear one loaf of stale bread into small pieces and place into a mixing bowl. Peel and then quarter one yellow onion. Crush one glove of garlic. Add 3 teaspoons of sage, and 1 cup of water. Mix with your hands.

2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the giblets and the neck from inside the turkey. Rinse the turkey under cool running water and rub all debris from inside and outside the turkey. Pat it dry, and then rub it with salt and pepper.

3. Open the turkey. Take a handful of the stuffing and insert it inside the turkey. Push it toward the back as you fill the inside cavity.

4. Put 1 teaspoon of flour inside a baking bag made for an extra large turkey. Grasp the top opening and shake the bag to get the flour on all sides. Put the turkey inside the bag and add 3 tablespoons of butter to the bag. Pull the top together and use the tie clasp to close the cooking bag.

5. Line a large baking pan with tin foil. Place the turkey, breast side down, into the pan. Place it on the bottom rack and remove all racks above it. Set the timer for 3 ½ hours for an extra large turkey. Estimate 15 minutes per pound of turkey as turkey tends to cook faster inside a bag.

6. Remove the turkey when the timer goes off. Make a small slit in the bag. Allow the juices to drip into a sauce pan placed under the slit. Turn the turkey, breast side up, and slit the bag down the center. Pull the sides of the bag apart and place the turkey back into the oven for another 30 minutes to brown.

7. Remove turkey from oven once done. Spoon out the dressing into a bowl. Slice the turkey for your meal. Make gravy with the drippings and giblets, if desired.
