A watermelon grows on a vine.
Watermelons can be a luscious summertime treat for you and your family. Children especially enjoy the timeless pastime of biting into a slice of fresh watermelon and letting the cool, sticky juices run down their arms. However, this pastime cannot be enjoyed until just the right watermelon is found and picked from the vine. If you and your family have watermelons in your garden, or if you're going out for an afternoon of watermelon picking, you should use a specific technique when removing the fruit from the vine.
Instructions
1. Tap the watermelon you want to pick to make sure it's ripe. You should hear a dull sound.
2. Turn the watermelon on its side and check for the "ground" spot. It will be yellow, not green, in color.
3. Keep the watermelon on its side and locate the tendrils that are most near the melon. These will be darker.
4. Place a sharp blade next to the vine that these tendrils are connected to and give it a quick swipe. This will remove the watermelon from the vine. Always use a knife, rather than pulling the watermelon from the vine.
