Your octopus stands by using its eight tentacles.
Whether in ocean dioramas or as a general craft, a handmade octopus looks more realistic when it's able to stand upright. One way to construct a simple octopus for children is to use the cardboard roll from toilet paper. After your child decorates the exterior to make it resemble an octopus, cut the bottom in a way that allows it to stand tall tall. Making this simple standing octopus makes an excellent rainy day activity or project alongside learning about underwater life.
Instructions
1. Ball up a piece of white paper and stuff it into your toilet paper roll. Push it up so it blocks one and closes one end, level with the top of the toilet paper roll. This forms the top of the head of your octopus.
2. Paint the entire toilet toll with paper light purple using acrylic or tempura paint and a small craft paintbrush. Paint the top of the head as well. Allow it to dry completely.
3. Cut eight equally spaced 3-inch slits around the bottom of the toilet roll, at the opposite end of the head. These will form the octopus's eight tentacles.
4. Roll up each slit gently to form a tentacle. Your octopus now stands on its tentacles.
5. Instruct your child to draw two circular eyes in the center of the octopus's face using markers. Add a mouth as well, and any other finishing touches desired.
