Some seafood shipping companies will freeze their calamari to maintain its freshness, but many others offer overnight solutions to provide their customers with fresh and unfrozen product. Before ordering fresh calamari online or over the phone, ensure that they ship the calamari precleaned and unfrozen.


Scrutinizing Calamari for Freshness


Smell the cephlopod to get a general idea of how fresh it is. Like most other seafood, calamari should only give off a very faint "fishy" smell. Pass up on any squid that has a strong fishy smell. Check the body of the squid for a bit of firmness, soft and discolored flesh indicates that the squid's fresh is near or past expiration.


Considerations
