Become A Vet Tech In Rhode Island

Veterinary technicians are animal health care professionals who assist veterinarians. Vet techs are similar to human nurses. They work under the supervision of the veterinarian performing duties from dispensing medication to assisting in surgery. Veterinary technicians may be certified in Rhode Island after completing their education and tests. Certification is voluntary in Rhode Island.

Instructions

1. Work for a veterinarian, zoo or farm caring for animals. Find out whether you like the work that veterinary technicians perform. Ask a vet tech if you can job shadow for a few days. Following the vet tech will give you a good idea of what a vet tech actually does. The Rhode Island Veterinary Technician Association and Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association post available jobs on their websites.

2. Enroll in an American Veterinary Medical Association accredited school. Most accredited programs offer an associates degree in applied science, a two-year program. If you intend to become a certified veterinary technician, the school program that you enroll in must be AVMA accredited. A list of approved programs can be found on the AVMA website.

3. Decide whether you want to become certified. In Rhode Island, certification by the American Veterinary Medical Association is voluntary, not mandated by the state. You can work as a veterinary technician without certification; however, it will be easier to get a job if you have the certification.

4. Take the National Veterinary Technician Exam. The test is given in January and June. In order to receive certification the applicant must score a 75. The exam is offered through the American Association of Veterinary State Boards.

5. Provide a letter of recommendation. The letter is required, in addition to the degree from an accredited program and passing the national exam.

Tips Warnings

You can become certified even if you do not attend an accredited program. If you have an associate's or bachelor's degree in animal or biological sciences, work experience, pass the exam and provide a letter of recommendation, you can become certified.

Certification is also offered to individuals who have been employed as a veterinary technician for 5 years who also pass the exam and provide a letter of recommendation.
