Use Antique Gelatin Molds

Use Antique Gelatin Molds

Molded gelatin desserts enjoyed a sustained popularity throughout the 20th century, offering colorful and mouth-watering visual appeal. Homemakers all over America delighted in using a variety of fruits, vegetables, juices and dairy products to make stunning gelatin creations. While not quite as trendy today, one of these gelatin desserts would nonetheless add a delightfully retro note to even the hippest dinner parties. With a gelatin mold-either antique or new-and just a few basic kitchen supplies, you will be creating your own spectacular molded gelatin desserts certain to impress.

Instructions

Prepare the Mold

1. To figure out the volume of your mold, fill it to 1/8 inch from the top with water. Use the measuring cups to measure out the water used to fill up the mold. Most recipes for molded gelatin desserts will indicate what size mold you need to use.

2. Dry the mold thoroughly.

3. Coat the inside of the mold evenly with nonstick cooking spray.

Make Your Molded Gelatin Dessert

4. Mix your flavored gelatin with water according to package directions but reduce the water by ¼ cup for every 3 oz. of dry gelatin mix. According to "The New Joys of Jell-o Recipe Book," reducing the amount of water will help your gelatin to maintain its molded shape better.

5. Chill the mixed gelatin for 30 minutes or until slightly thickened.

6. Pour the chilled gelatin into the mold to a depth of ¼ inch.

7. Add your fruit or vegetables to the mold in a decorative pattern, then allow it to chill for another 30 minutes.

8. Slowly pour the remaining gelatin on top of the fruit and allow the entire mold to chill in the refrigerator for at least four hours.

Plate Your Dessert

9. Wet your fingertips and gently separate the gelatin from the edge of the mold.

10. Dip the mold into warm water up to the rim for 20 seconds.

11. Place the serving plate upside down on top of the mold.

12. Flip the plate and mold over and shake gently. You should feel the gelatin release from the inside of the mold. Set the plate down and gently remove the mold.
