How Many Glasses Of Wine Are In A Magnum

A large bottle of wine adds an extra note of excitement to any celebration. If you are planning a party, serving wine from an oversize bottle will get the guests in a festive mood from the beginning.

Size

The standard bottle of wine is 750ml. A magnum is equal to two standard bottles, and a double magnum holds four standard bottles of wine.

Standards

There is no hard and fast rule for the volume of a glass of wine. U.S. government agencies use a five-ounce serving as the standard.

Calculations

The five-ounce wine serving is equal to about 150ml. A magnum is 1.5 liters so the math is simple: a magnum holds 10 standard wine servings.

Considerations

The modern trend for wine-glass size is 20 oz. or larger. If you are calculating five-ounce servings for your event, the servers should know how far to fill up the glasses. Large glasses allow for a better exposure of the wine's bouquet.

Fun Fact

The double magnum is also called a jeroboam. Other jumbo bottle of wine have unique names: Methusaleh, eight standard bottles; Nubuchadnezzer, 20 standard bottles; and the giant Melchizedek holds the equivalent of 40 standard bottles of wine.
