If strawberries have been washed, care must be taken to keep them fresh.
In many areas, strawberries come into season in late spring or early summer. This delicious red berry is a source of vitamin C and other antioxidants, folates and fiber. Fresh-picked strawberries can be enjoyed alone, as a topper on cereal, yogurt or ice cream or mixed into salads and other dishes. Strawberries are very perishable and are best eaten fresh. Proper care can keep the berries fresh longer and prevent them from getting soft, rotten or moldy.
Instructions
1. A colander holds strawberries while you wash them.
Place fresh strawberries in a colander and wash them by spraying water over the strawberries. This is sufficient to wash off dirt without bruising the berries.
2. Shake the colander gently to drain water. Leave the strawberries in the colander for a few minutes to allow remaining water to drain off.
3. Spread the wet strawberries over a clean kitchen towel, in a single layer. Lay another towel on top of the strawberries. Gently pat the berries dry with the top towel.
4. Remove the top towel. Transfer the strawberries to a dry towel. Allow them to air dry completely on the towel.
5. Put the dry strawberries in a plastic or wire mesh container to allow air to circulate around the berries. Store the berries in the refrigerator. Eat them within 1 to 3 days after purchase.
