As of 2009, 181 wineries were operating in Texas, resulting in an economic impact of $1.35 billion, according to the Wine Division of the Texas Department of Agriculture. Grapes were first planted in the central region of Texas, where Austin is located, in the 1800s, when European settlers planted cuttings from their homelands. Texas Hill Country, a 14,000-square-mile area to the west of Austin, is home to 22 wineries open for tastings and tours.
