Vegetable Snacks For Kids

Vegetables can be incorporated into a variety of delicious snacks, such as a slice of vegetable packed pizza.

Some kids have an aversion to eating vegetables. This aversion is intensified when the kid's peers and classmates express their views regarding vegetables. But vegetable snacks can start a child on the road to healthy eating for the rest of their life if these obstacles are overcome. It requires greater effort and extra time to guide a kid to love vegetables but the rewards are well worth it for the rest of the child's life.

Kid-Size Cut Snacks

Spread a light coating of peanut butter on small segments of celery stalk. Baby carrots are always a favorite of children, especially when dipped into hummus or a low-fat dip. Other vegetables that go well with a low-fat dip are cauliflower florets, broccoli crowns and bell pepper strips. Cherry or grape tomatoes are kid-size and appealing to kids.

Snacks on The Go

Snacks are a fact of life for kids, whether coming home from school or playing in a soccer tournament. Vegetable snacks are generally eaten as finger foods and vegetable bars fit the bill perfectly. Vegetable bars are made from lots of chopped vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, zucchini and whole pumpkin seeds, then chilled and cut into squares. The bars travel well, are easy to handle and are delicious and energizing. Chilled grape tomatoes, chilled slices of yellow squash and slices of cucumber dunked into a yogurt dip make for a crispy, crunchy snack. You can also use an electric dehydrator, to dehydrate vegetables such as sweet corn, carrots, potatoes, peas and tomatoes. Dried vegetables are very flavorful and nutritious.

Light Meal/Snack

When a child is eating a light meal to bridge the gap between meals that are widely spaced, or something to eat after a long day before bed time, vegetables are an excellent choice. A half sandwich and a glass of milk is made even better with the primary ingredients on the sandwich is spinach leaves and tomatoes with fresh sprouts. Whole grain crackers topped with a smear of low-fat cream cheese and a slice of yellow or zucchini squash are colorful and delicious as a light meal before bedtime.
